Modern common-rail injectors operate with tolerances of 1–3 µm at pressures exceeding 2,000 bar — even small amounts of contamination can cause costly damage. Fuel filters with built-in water separators additionally remove moisture that corrodes pump components and injector nozzles.

Water in diesel fuel corrodes the precision components of the high-pressure pump and injectors. Even 200 ppm of water can halve injector service life. The water separator traps emulsified and free water, which is then drained through a valve at the bottom of the filter bowl.
In heavy-duty vehicles every 30,000–60,000 km; in construction machines every 500–1,000 engine hours. Check the filter more frequently in winter, when condensation in the fuel tank increases, and after refuelling from unknown sources.
Many diesel fuel filters feature a differential-pressure sensor or a sight glass that shows how clogged the element is. When the service light comes on or the gauge reaches the red zone, the filter is nearing the end of its service life and should be replaced.
